Robb Report’s Top 50 Greatest Luxury Hotels on Earth
Robb Report has just released its lannual Top 50, with four inclusions from Baillie Lodges.
A scenic tour of Lake Taupō on a luxury cruiser is a wonderful way to spend a relaxed day or afternoon, taking in views of the spectacular mountain-lined backdrop, contemporary Māori rock carvings and with optional trout fishing and delicious gourmet lunch.
Guests at Huka Lodge can opt for a luxury cruise of Lake Taupō, a gentle and stylish way to experience the scenic beauty of the Singapore-sized freshwater lake taking in magnificent lake and mountain views. The vast lake is often compared to an inland ocean, complete with picturesque bays, caves and beaches, and white caps on a windy day. On a clear day the majestic volcanoes of Mounts Ruapehu, Ngāuruhoe and Tongariro can be spotted on the horizon at the lake’s southern end.
A gourmet lunch, premium New Zealand wines and beverages are provided as a perfect accompaniment to a leisurely cruise. A half-day or full day Lake Taupō cruise includes an up-close encounter with the larger-than-life Ngatoroirangi Mine Bay Māori rock carvings. Carved by artist Matahi Brightwell and towering some 14 metres above water level, the rock carvings are hailed as New Zealand’s most extraordinary contemporary Māori artworks.
There’s an option to try trout fishing, and all equipment including fishing licenses are provided. Most Taupō lake fishing uses either lures or flies and complements the peaceful, restful vibe on the lake’s still waters. Kayaks are also available for those who’d like to explore the western bays’ inlets more closely.
And, for a more spectacular experience of Lake Taupō, the Mini Huka Experience is a half-day heli and cruise adventure combining the best of Taupō from the air and from its clear, calm waters.
The adventure begins with a private vehicle transfer from Huka Lodge to join a private launch for three hours of cruising and trout fishing on beautiful Lake Taupō. Board a waiting helicopter for the next leg of this tour, flying over Mt. Tauhara for a bird’s-eye-view of the Wairakei Geothermal Terraces, the Craters of the Moon and the northern shores of Lake Taupō.
The flight returns over the mighty Huka Falls before landing on the lawn at Huka Lodge.
