Robb Report’s Top 50 Greatest Luxury Hotels on Earth
Robb Report has just released its lannual Top 50, with four inclusions from Baillie Lodges.
Baillie Lodges has combined the very best of South Australia’s food, wine and wilderness experiences in one grand adventure: The Southern Welcome.
The generously inclusive package includes a two- night stay at the newly reopened Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island plus the option of two nights at sister property The Louise in the Barossa Valley, complete with complimentary airport transfers. Extra nights are easy to add on for an even better getaway.
Perfect for an extra-long weekend, the Southern Welcome begins in the South Australian capital of Adelaide. A short flight across the water delivers guests to Australia’s third largest island, Kangaroo Island where a Southern Ocean Lodge vehicle and guide will be waiting. Guests discover the diverse landscape of this wildly beautiful island on the drive to the lodge.
Sensitively designed to blend seamlessly with the wildly beautiful landscape, Southern Ocean Lodge appears to float along its secluded clifftop setting.
By clever architectural design, the first glimpse guests have of the ever-changing Southern Ocean for which the luxury lodge is named is as the wide doors are swing open by the team, welcoming arriving guests to the Great Room with its floor-to-ceiling windows taking in the expanse of ocean and wild coast.
Twenty-five guest suites ease along the magnificent limestone coast, each with views of the ocean. All-inclusive rates mean guests feel right at home and help themselves to a drink at the bar in the Great Room, a bottle of local wine from the walk-in cellar or to gourmet treats in the insuite bar.
Dining is in the restaurant, with its views of the ocean and along the coast changing throughout the day. Breakfast captures the sun’s rays as its stretches across the ocean; a two-course lunch may be enjoyed out on the terrace with wine optional, and sunset drinks and canapes are served around the six-metre table commissioned by South Australia design legend Khai Liew with a chance to meet fellow guests and chat about the day’s adventures. Dinner is a multi-course affair featuring exclusively South Australian produce and with premium local wines matched by course.
Widely acclaimed as Australia’s Galapagos, Kangaroo Island is home to diverse native wildlife each thriving in its domain and a swag of spectacular natural attractions.
Guided adventures of Kangaroo Island’s incredible natural attractions are a chance to discover more about the ecology and heritage of the abundant native wildlife, from the island’s namesake kangaroos, wallabies and echidnas to fur seals, sea lions and – in migration season – whales and dolphins cruising by. Enjoy nocturnal adventures under a canopy of stars and sunset drinks in the great outdoors in the company a few fellow guests plus a few curious ‘roos. Magic moments.
Arriving back in Adelaide, a chauffeur awaits guests in the airport’s arrivals hall and the next part of the adventure awaits. Enjoy a private limousine transfer to the Barossa Valley, escaping the city surrounds for the valley’s gently rolling hills and criss-cross of vineyards. Enjoy welcome drinks – perhaps a local gin and tonic – on arrival at The Louise, set in the heart of the Barossa food and wine country.
The concierge team at The Louise is part of the close-knit Barossa community and is famous for its little black book of contacts for the many great restaurants, wineries, cellar doors, galleries and tour operators that opens doors across the region. Meet the team to chat through any special requests or interests, for a specially tailored ‘backstage pass’ to the Barossa.
Begin the day with a gourmet breakfast with local produce as a highlight and perhaps join the team from Barossa Wellness for a guided yoga and meditation or early morning walk with the kangaroos.
Wellness is at the heart of a stay at The Louise, where good food and wines may bookend a day dedicated to looking after mind, body and spirit.
By day, embark on a discovery of the Barossa’s established and emerging wineries and cellar doors, explore the nearby Wonderground gallery or the Jam Factory and settle in for an afternoon’s long lunch at one of the many excellent restaurants, including St Hugo, Hentley Farm, Otherness and Fino at Seppeltsfield just down the road.
In the evening watch the sun turn golden over the Barossa vineyards from the outdoor lounging spaces and enjoy sunset drinks and snacks. Dinner in Appellation is a highlight to a stay at The Louise, as Executive Chef Joel Grudnoff transforms fresh produce from the Barossa’s community of growers and suppliers to a five-course degustation menu each with matched wines.
Welcome to the south!
